Comic-Con International reveals the nominees for the Promising Newcomer Award.

The 2014 Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award shortlist has been revealed.

Comic-Con International has announced the nominees that are up for the prize, which will be awarded during the San Diego festival in July.

The nominees are Aaron Conley (Sabertooth Swordsman), Vanesa R Del Rey (Hit), Stephan Franck (Silver), Anders Lazaret (The Brave) and Greg Smallwood (Dream Thief).

The award is named after the artist who worked on the Tarzan and Star Wars newspaper strips and created Magnus, Robot Fighter.

The prize has been awarded annually since 1982, with previous recipients including Jan Duursema, Steve Rude, Scott McCloud, Art Adams, Jeff Smith, Gene Ha, Alexander Maleev, Goran Sudzuka, David Petersen, Marion Churchland and Tyler Crook.

The shortlist was chosen by the West Coast Comics Club and Comic-Con International organisers, with past Manning award winners and Russ Manning assistants selecting the winner.

The Russ Manning Award will be announced on July 25.
